Welcome to Cabanijazz Project.
Below are great reasons (videos and pics) why this band is special!
“Some things you can point out, Other things you can’t. Cabanijazz Project is about music, music that you might not be able to point out. But you can feel it, ’cause Cabanijazz Project is Hella Danceable!”
On Thursday, enjoy a beautiful Dinner and dance with Cabanijazz Project. Here’s the info!
1. Original Compositions and arrangements range from Son, Cha Cha Cha, Mambo, Boogaloo, Salsa and Timba.
All harness the rich harmonies of Jazz. Our Jazz Influences are John Coltrane and Gerry Mulligan.
2. Instrumentation is Unique! A Tenor Saxophone, a Baritone Saxophone, and a Trombone are all Lower Register Instruments.
Saxophones provide the warmth and beautiful melodies and perfect for those Mambo riffs commonly used in the 50’s of Perez Prado and Benny Moré.
The Trombone is the lead melody instrument for our horn section, which provides a warmer and more aggressive tone, when the trombone is combined with the soothing sounds of the saxes, it’s very rich in tones and harmony. Think of Eddie Palmeiri and Manny Oquendo’s Orquesta Libre.
3. No Piano is used! (most salsa bands commonly use a piano for their bands).
Instead, Cabanijazz Project uses organ/rhodes/clav sounds for their montunos.
Think of Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition” thus, it gives Cabanijazz Project a “Retro” sound and we retain that retro influence: That is another significant and signature sound of Cabanijazz Project.
4. Percussion Section uses Congas and a Hybrid Latin Drum Set … which no salsa band in SF Bay Area uses.
Others use bongo, congas, and timbales. We only use Congas and Hybrid Latin Drum Set. This is truly found in bands like Batacumbele of Puerto Rico, Los Van Van and Irakere of Cuba all three of those from the 70’s.
5. All our music is HELLA Danceable!
6. “Jazz” element in the name CABANIJAZZ refers to the improvised parts for constant communication with the dancing audience.
In other words, Salsa Bands today only play a specific form and very few times they allow for an improvised part… this is different in Cabanijazz Project.
The Same tune can be played different every time since it composed and arranged for improvising. Imagine dancing the same routine with the same way with the same number of people and never changing your steps, etc. We’ll that’s how many salsa bands play their music. They play the song, but never change their steps and routine. In Cabanijazz Project, they allow the music to live in the moment, changing and trying new things just like the dancers who try out different steps and moves with their dance partner. It’s about evolucion… So their focus is on the music, the tempos, the Jazz Harmonies.
Because Cabanijazz Project is actually a “Project” that allows for collaboration with singers, other instrumentalists, it becomes easy adapt to the Project … this is very useful for “Special Guests” and for Festivals, etc. The “Project” allows them to adapt and modify as they develop and deepen our musical influences.
7. All of musicians in Cabanijazz Project are 100% dedicated musicians devoted to music and creativity.
Examples: professors in Universities and Music Teachers in Public, Private schools as well as non-profit organizations.
In other words, we pay our taxes as a musicians and it’a not just a hobble to make “extra cash”. That being said, the quality of music is even more so challenging and rewarding for both musicians and audiences.
