Helen Beristain says she thought they would only deport, “bad hombres”, not “good people” like her husband Roberto. Mensa.
Helen told Indiana Public Media she voted for Trump because, “
“We don’t want to have cartels here, you don’t want to have drugs in your high schools, you don’t want killers next to you. You want to feel safe when you leave your house. I truly believe that.”
Helen, like many others, believes in xenophobic stereotypes and lies instead of research and facts.
FACT: Citizens, not immigrants, actually commit the majority of crime in the U.S.
FACT: More white people commit crimes than Latinos.
Roberto is being held in an ICE detention center in Wisconsin, and if the recent incidents of forced labor and suicide are any indication, he isn’t having a good time.
The silver lining here is that Roberto’s conservative community in Indiana is rallying to his defense! A local mayor wrote:
“Think of the favorite themes of conservatism: hard work, small business ownership, suspicion of overbearing government, and support for family. Each one of those themes is at stake here ― and each is insulted by the prospect of a person like Roberto being ripped away from his business, friends, wife, and children, by a federal agency.”
Hopefully, Roberto’s situation will help people understand what’s really going on.
