Mariachi Sol de México represents more than 125 years of mariachi tradition. Last year marked their thirty-fifth anniversary.
In 1981 José Hernández, at the age of twenty-three, founded Mariachi Sol de México in Los Angeles. His compositions navigate styles such as traditional Mexican folk, classical, and pop. Mariachi Sol de México has recorded with American and Mexican artists such as Linda Ronstadt, Willie Nelson, Juan Gabriel, Lola Beltran, Vicente Fernandez, Selena, Green Day, Luis Miguel, Shaila Durcal, Vikki Carr, and Aida Cuevas. The ensemble’s CDs, Tequila con Limon con El Mariachi Sol de México and 25 Anniversario José Hernández y Su Mariachi Sol de México have both been nominated for Grammys. They were the first mariachi group to be nominated for a Grammy award. Their most recent recording LA MUSICA, Mariachi Sol de México de José Hernández con La Sinfónica Nacional de Las Américas was nominated for a Latin Grammy in 2013.
Mariachi Sol de México has performed with the orchestras of New Mexico, Denver, Sacramento, and Los Angeles. The group made its debut under San Francisco Symphony auspices in December 2009 and has returned every year since. José Hernández has grown to become an American cultural ambassador having toured to Spain, Chile, Venezuela, and Colombia, and Mariachi Sol de México holds the distinction of being the first mariachi group to perform in China and North Korea and has performed for four US Presidents at the White House.
José Hernández comes from a family that has been performing mariachi music for five generations and he has shared the stage with his five brothers since the age of three. He has appeared on more than twenty Hollywood soundtracks, including Rango, Seabiscuit, Don Juan de Marco, A Million to Juan, and McFarland. He was recently inducted into the Mariachi Hall of Fame.
