Will You Make a Holiday Gift to Help Farm Workers?
As the holiday season approaches, there’s no better time to support the work the people who labor so hard to feed us.
The last four years for farm workers under the Trump administration have been hard. Farm workers have felt like they had a target on their back, while laws that we have fought so hard for to protect farm workers and rural communities have been weakened or just disappeared.
And then came 2020 with COVID-19 and inadequate provisions to protect and support the people who put food on our tables. We’ve always worked hard, but we’ve been running on turbo ever since using all of our resources and power to defend essential farm workers.
When Joe Biden and Kamala Harris won the election, farm workers breathed a sigh of relief. At last, an administration that not only would not persecute them but who also appointed UFW President Teresa Romero to the transition team. They are committed to immigration reform that would allow the people who have been quietly feeding our nation for decades to come out of the shadows.
But all is not rosy. There is much work to be done to begin undoing the harm the Trump Administration has done. We need to be in court to fight the new regulations that would lower farm workers’ pay and move billions of dollars over the next 10 years from farm workers’ pockets to growers’ wallets. Additionally, as the reality of COVID-19 grows, we need to fight for COVID protections for farm workers who are laboring in close conditions on the front line.
Just last month, we discovered that we have a huge, costly battle looming in the US Supreme Court with its new 6-3 conservative majority. The Court just agreed to hear a case that would slam the door shut on us going to the fields and helping farm workers. Growers have taken California’s fair access rule to court repeatedly over the decades and always lost, but who knows what could happen with the makeup of this new Court?
We have to do it all and are looking to good supporters like yourself for help. In this season of giving we ask you to again help farm workers.
As we enter the holiday season and look forward to the close of 2020 and to the New Year, we want to ask you to make your holiday gift today, so we can continue to do the good work we do all year long. Any amount will make a difference to workers in the fields.
