Background:

Anyone who thinks there aren’t many inspirations for Latino youth these days hasn’t been paying attention to what the Latino Role Model Conference has been doing the past 25 years.

Launched in 1990 by Esau Herrera and his family, the conference has introduced San Jose youth to a huge roster of panelists, made up of alumni from the East Side Union High School District, who have built careers as engineers, attorneys, teachers, public safety officers and media representatives.

“It’s hard to be what you can’t see,” Herrera says. “Our students need to see their own reflection in the leaders and role models from our community.”

The 25th anniversary conference takes place this Saturday at Overfelt High School in San Jose, starting with the annual role model procession at 9:15 a.m. and continuing through the day.

Some of this year’s panelists are Dr. Juan Carrillo, Dr. Judith Sanchez, San Jose police officer Victor Rodriguez, KTVU-TV reporter Janine de la Vega, attorney Servando Sandoval and teacher Karina Soto.
