“Infortunios de la Fe” will be at Galeria Beso Maya, October 5th, thru the end of November 2019.
This Oakland fine art gallery is the space of artist/gallerist, Yadira Cazares, and showcases the work of established and emerging Bay Area, POC artists.
With “Infortunios de la Fe”, Manuel’s work tries to capture a phenomenon of which he is a part: the misfortune of getting sick, of abandonment, becoming poorer, the death of himself or a loved one, becoming violent or corrupt within a society that presents all those possibilities.
The limit of misfortune is faith and death in Mexico. The work uses a series of figurative images where the iconography of the Aztec signs is mixed with the popular culture and reinterpreted in the light of the new mass consumption culture.
Manuel Ruelas is an artist born in Jalisco, Mexico and is a graduate of the University of Guadalajara. His work is influenced by the aesthetics inherited from the Mexican Popular Graphic Workshop, as well as from graphics of German expressionism of the 20th century.
