Support the event:
Donations (suggested $10 or more) will be requested to help pay for event expenses. In general, it’s a free event, but it’s also a community supported event.
Your donation helps to sustain it as an annual event. A portion of the gross proceeds (donations, etc.) collected at the event, used to pay for expenses, will be donated to two causes. The first cause is the fight against Alzheimer’s disease through vital research and essential support programs and services. The Alzheimer Association is a foundation that has been fighting Alzheimer’s disease for many years. This cause is dear to me because my mother lived with it for over 10 years and passed away from it in 2015. They will receive 5% of the proceeds. The other cause receiving the other 5% is the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation, which is a leading supporter and funder of medical research in Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis—collectively known as inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). Earlier this year, I was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease after many months of symptoms that disrupted my life, especially in regards to my passion of dance. I also have family and friends who live with Crohn’s or ulcerative colitis. It is an ailment that has no known cause. Even a person with a good diet and exercise regimen, like an athlete, can be diagnosed with it, but it is manageable. The Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation is a non-profit, volunteer-driven organization dedicated to finding the cures for Crohn’s Disease and ulcerative colitis, and to improving the quality of life of children and adults affected by these diseases. Please support these two cause.
It’s Labor Day, a holiday. If you are in the Peninsula, S.F., South Bay, or even further south or north, come and add your energy to this cauldron of musical love y familia. You can take BART to the Ashby BART Station (see the “pinned post” for walking directions to the Block Party) or drive over here.
Bring your lawn chair if you would like to sit, but why since you’ll be dancing. We will not be providing food (lots of hoop jumping for the food permit), but bring some for yourself and (if you want) to share. Also of great note, this is an alcohol free event, and alcohol consumption on the street or sidewalk is against the law. You may be cited and/or arrested by Berkeley PD and the event may be shutdown, as a result. Again, please do not bring any alcoholic beverages.
The city block party permit was difficult to obtain this year. Due to the new location being close to Telegraph Ave, the city engineers will keep an eye out for any complaints. If one is made, then this may be the last Berkeley Salsa Block Party. Let’s work together to keep the event and neighborhood clean, safe, conflict free, within block party permit compliance, and as good a grassroots community event as we can make it.
And most important of all, bring your Love, good, enlightening, and fun dance energy! Bring your kids because it is a totally kid friendly/family event. As the Agustin Luna Presents slogan goes ¡Disfruta!
Remember to join the Agustin Luna Presents et al page ( https://www.facebook.com/groups/639498999501327/ ) that announces future Agustín Luna Presents events/classes, and other San Francisco Bay Area salsa events that are low cost or free, but offer the best/biggest/most bang for your buck.
