La Ultima Parada
Sunday, October 30, Noon-8pm
San Jose’s Mexican Heritage Plaza will host LUP for a second year, expecting over 4,000 participants.
The long-standing Dia de los Muertos celebration returns in a major way with La Ultima Parada: A Celebration of Life on the Day of the Dead, an all-day spectacular set to take place at the School of Arts and Culture at the Mexican Heritage Plaza (SOAC) on October 30, 2016.
La Ultima Parada (LUP) plans to showcase the vibrancy of Mexican culture through a collection of cultural festivities, dances, and musical performances that honor the living and the dead.
$5.00 for adults; FREE for kids 10 & under.
LUP has been celebrated annually in San Jose thanks to the vision of local artists Rick Moreno and Maria Luisa Colmenarez.
Starting out of Mr. Moreno’s home in 1997, the School of Arts and Culture at Mexican Heritage Plaza will host LUP for a second year, expecting over 4,000 participants.
Attendees will enjoy a variety of activities for the entire family. There will be games of Loteria (bingo), arts and crafts, costume contest, face painting and a ferris wheel. LUP will have a Mercadito with over a dozen Dia de los Muertos themed retailers. There will be a variety of food and beverages.
There will also be a presentation of La Viejada traditional dance with over 300 masked danzantes from San Jose folklorico dance companies participating to honor our dearly departed.
Keeping with the spirit of honoring those who have passed, there will be a “camposanto” (graveyard) in the garden to pay tribute to iconic Latino artists and entertainers in recognition of their contributions to Latino culture. The centerpiece of the event will feature an enlarged altar in the middle of the plaza by prominent San Jose artist, Raquel Burciaga. Community altars will be on exhibit in the theater lobby remembering passed members of the community.
This year, LUP counts with 3 stages with a variety of presentations!
- Two stages will be curated by Sonido Clash, who bring in artists such as La Diabla and Corazon Salvaje to play among their own DJ sets.
- LA-based, Ricardo Lemvo & Makina Loca bring to LUP their blend of Afro-Cuban rhythms with pan-African styles.
- In collaboration with SJ Jazz, LUP will also feature NYC-based Flor de Toloache with their versatile and modern take on traditional Mexican Music.
