EXPERIENCE a Mercadito with over two dozen Dia de los Muertos themed retailers as well as a wide variety of delicious food and beverages.

Half of our retailers will be located in the Gravel Lot Mercado surrounded by the food trucks, a seated dining area and the San Jose Jazz Festival’s SJBoomBox Stage, curated by San Jose’s very own Sonido Clash. The other half will be located in the plaza Garden/Trellis area and will offer Day of the Dead themed merchandise.

For nearly two decades, LUP has been an annual celebration in San Jose that came to life through the vision of local artists Rick Moreno, Maria Luisa Colmenarez & Barbara Perez-Diaz.

What started as a humble, living room celebration for artists, poets, dancers, musicians, writers, scholars has morphed into a multicultural celebration produced by Chris Ezparza, Giant Creative & Maria Luisa Colmenarez, Alegria de San Jose and currently housed at The School of Arts and Culture at Mexican Heritage Plaza for an amazing fourth year.

The centerpiece of the event is the masked tribute dance, La Viejada de San Jose, one of LUP’s long standing traditions. La Viejada is a traditional dance originating in the state of Veracruz that honors those who have passed. The masked danzantes from the San Jose folklorico dance companies honor our dearly departed with sonecitos by local young composer, Luis Xavier Garcia, specifically to honor San Jose landmarks: La Plaza, La Pulga, Story & King, EastSide Llorona, Sal Si Puedes & new for 2018, Luna y Sol, honoring the hard-work and dedication of San Jose State University’s talented student folklorico dance company.

This year, our Main Stage will feature San Jose music and dance companies: Mariachi Azteca, Mariachi Tapatio, Los Panaderos, Colibri Music, Los Mestizos, Heruvi Kalo, Xochitl Cultural & Ensamble Folklorico Colibri among other favorites. Main Stage activity will close with live music from local favorites Lado Oriente.

Day of the Dead community altars will be on exhibit in the theater lobby remembering passed members of the community. The garden of the venue will be turned into a “camposanto” (graveyard) to pay tribute to iconic Latino artists and entertainers in recognition of their contributions to Latino culture by prominent San Jose artist, Raquel Burciaga. At night, the face of the MHC theater will come alive with a Day of the Dead themed projection display by the talented R+A Media artists.
