Manos de Mujeres will delve into the complex role of women today. It will highlight and honor the important work of women and the brilliant tools of their hands that have and continue to sustain us.
Their physical, artistic and intellectual work is often not recognized and yet they often carry the weight of their communities in their hands. Womens hands, beautiful and broken, are their lifelines, their power, their tools for tending.
In cultures that have strong gender roles, it can be difficult for women to break from their expected roles of mothers, sisters, daughters, wives, lovers, and caretakers. Both historically and currently they are limited in their possibilities, and opportunities, yet are expected and do an immense amount of work. In many Latino and Caribbean cultures in particular, many women are dependent on men for financial support and often, physical survival which perpetuates the traditional values of machismo. Although this is ever evolving, it still stands in sharp contrast to the modern American woman who has made more advances towards independence.
We honor those women whose work is never done regardless if they work outside the home. Their childrens, partners, parents and self-care including education, emotions, and physical well-being is literally and metaphorically in their hands.
