This exhibition explores the topic of foods justice from Latinx, Chicanx, Central American, indigenous, and immigrant perspectives.
Galería de la Raza is seeking art for an upcoming group exhibition titled Comida es Medicina. This exhibition explores the topic of foods justice from Latinx, Chicanx, Central American, indigenous, and immigrant perspectives. Interested artists are asked to submit 1-3 works of art that speak to this theme. We welcome works in all mediums and alternative practices.
We are especially interested in artwork that reclaims indigenous food knowledge; critiques the current globalized food system (NAFTA, agribusiness, labor exploitation, Monsanto, GMO, etc.); and/or highlights the multiple ways that contemporary Latinx/Chicanx communities are developing their own visions of food justice, decolonization, plant-based diets, and community healing. This exhibition seeks to contest white supremacy by uplifting the knowledge, traditions, and practices of immigrant and indigenous members of our Latinx communities in relation to food, ancestral knowledge, and respect for Mother Earth.
Comida es Medicina seeks to deepen and engage the ideas proposed in Luz Calvo and Catriona R. Esquibel’s, Decolonize Your Diet: Mexican-American, Plant-Based Recipes for Health and Healing (Arsenal Pulp Press, 2015). In this book, Calvo and Esquibel propose a critical framework for reclaiming ancestral foods in order to recover the spiritual and physical health of our communities.
This exhibition will be co-curated by Suzy González and Luz Calvo. Comida es Medicina is supported in part by the National Association of Latino Arts and Cultures, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Ford Foundation, Southwest Airlines, and the Surdna Foundation through a grant from the NALAC Fund for the Arts Grant Program.
