Although 15-year-old Ángela Aguilar, daughter of Pepe Aguilar, is already a two-time Latin Grammy nominee, this is the first Grammy nomination and performance for the high school freshman.

Ángela may be young, but she has already recorded four albums and performed for tens of thousands of people, including a live performance of “La Llorona” at this year’s opening ceremony alongside Aida Cuevas and Natalia Lafourcade. See video below!

Ángela is what some have called “ranchera royalty”.

Her father is, of course, Grammy-award-winner Pepe Aguilar, her grandfather was Grammy-nominated mariachi Antonio Aguilar, and her grandmother is Mexican singer and actress Flor Silvestre

In a recent interview, Ángela talked about her family and upbringing:

“My backyard was literally the Grammys, and my play area was the Staples Center. My upbringing taught me values. No matter how much you have or how many concerts you do, everyone’s the same. That’s really helped me as an artist.”

“I was born in Los Angeles, and I’ve been living here all my life. But that doesn’t make me any less Mexican and that doesn’t make me any less part of my culture. […] Before I spoke English, I spoke Spanish.”

Ángela is nominated for her album Primero Soy Mexicana. When asked about the title of her album, she explained:

“That’s where I came from, it’s in my veins, that’s why I sing the songs that I do. I’m honoring my ancestors and the traditions that my grandfather and my grandmother have led me to follow. So before anything […] I’m Mexican, and I’m proud of it.”
