MoAD in San Francisco will celebrate the national observance of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday as a Day of Service, providing FREE admission to the museum and programs throughout the day.
Through art, performance and music, our special guests will help us reflect on the importance of protest, creativity and diverse communities.

About this event:
Prescott Circus Theater will delight people of all ages in front of the museum, and performances by Marcus Shelby and his Youth Orchestra, and CO-LLAB Choir pay tribute to King and the legacy of the Civil Rights Movement. A family art activity and gallery scavenger hunt connects families to our current exhibitions—Liberatory Living: Protective Interiors & Radical Black Joy; What We Carry to Set Ourselves Free by Helina Metaferia; and Cosmic Ceremony by Soleé Darrell.

Marcus Shelby Bassist, composer, educator, and artistic director for the Healdsburg Jazz Festival will present a musical celebration to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement. The Marcus Shelby Quintet featuring a group of rising stars will perform rearrangements of spirituals, freedom songs, and original music composed by Shelby. In 2013, the Marcus Shelby Orchestra released “Soul of the Movement: Meditations on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.” available on all platforms.
