About show!

Duo Violão Plus One started with two Rio de Janeiro based guitarists, Rogério Souza and Edinho Gerber, and the desire to explore and expand the musical possibilities of playing two violões, or Brazilian guitars.

During their first visit to the Bay Area in 2015, they met percussionist Ami Molinelli and the musical connection was immediate.

The ensemble navigates 20th century Brazilian popular music, emphasizing Brazil’s first original musical genre, choro, while also showcasing original works and inventive arrangements. The group’s first album, A História de Choro, was released in 2019 and featured as one of the best musical albums of the Bay Area by the San Jose Mercury News.

In 2020-21 they produced a project to further explore the intersections between choro and samba. Raizes do Choro e Samba (Roots of Choro and Samba) was an online concert presented during the pandemic that featured a blend of compositions that showcase these connections and will be the basis of their upcoming release.

For this tour, Tiago Souza will be filling in for Edinho Gerber.

Tiago Souza follows in the footsteps of his father, Ronaldo do Bandolim, an icon of the Brazilian mandolin. Playing with emotion and freedom, Tiago is part of a school of musicians formed in the Lapa district in Rio during the 2000s that mixes traditional choro with other musical styles like baião, samba, tango, and jazz, while creating a new style of interpretation and improvisation. He has participated in several recordings of choro and samba, among them Regional Carioca, Callado, the Father of the Chorões, the DVD Brasileirinho and Historias de um João de Barro with Bia Bedran. His current tour schedule includes Europe and the U.S. with samba groups such as: Unha de Gato, Pé de Moleque, and Semente Choro-Jazz.

Grupo Falso Baiano is a choro group based in San Francisco, CA.  Choro is one of Brazil’s earliest popular musics, similar to jazz, reflecting the melding of African rhythms with a melodic and harmonic structure closely resembling Baroque Classical music. Grupo Falso Baiano takes its name from the famous Geraldo Pereira song “Falsa Baiana” (which appears on our album Depois). A “falsa baiana” (or falso baiano) is a fake Bahian: one who claims to come from the state of Bahia, named after its famous bay. Hence the play on words as it applies to Grupo Falso Baiano: since we hail from the San Francisco Bay Area, we are Bahians of North America, but are “fake Brazilians”. Website | Facebook
