Sariyah Idan (Pronounced: Sah-ree-yah Ee-dahn) is an internationally touring singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and actor-playwright rooted in the culture of poetry.
Her evocative and eclectic music blends multiple genres. Trained in jazz & folk, hip-hop & soul educated, Ms Idan is heavily influenced by the music of her Jewish roots, the classic sounds of dub/reggae and the celebration of cultural fusion found in Latin American music styles.
With a passion for ethnomusicology and social movements, Ms Idan intentionally mixes different genres not simply as a sonic fusion but as an expression of social activism and is indebted to her mentors, including Melanie DeMore, for guiding her in this practice. She has shared stages with Pete Seeger, Lee “Scratch” Perry and Yusef Lateef as well as recordings with Marcia Griffiths and Caron Wheeler on Dubblstandat’s album Woman In Dub. Fusicology reviewed the release of her debut solo EP Deeper Than Skin in December 2014 as “powerful, soulful, spirited songs filled with stories of joy, struggle, love and social justice”.
