Barrio Manouche is an acoustic San Francisco-Based international collective (Spain, Quebec, France, Mexico, Brasil, Colombia and California), playing music that will take you on a magical journey, frequently joined by artists from all over the globe.
The ensemble has been recognized for its surprise concerts, innovative style, complex technique, and their passion for their musical improvisation.
The band performs a repertoire of original, mostly instrumental compositions with a unique sound that it’s difficult to classify but instantly recognizable, deeply influenced by a range of musical traditions, from the swing of Louis Armstrong and Sidney Bechet, to the Hot Jazz of Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli, the Gypsy soul of Eastern Europe, the Nuevo Flamenco of Paco de Lucía and Camarón de la Isla to the Avant-Garde sounds of Miles Davis, Ornate Coleman and John Coltrane.
For the past 11 years, Oakland-based LoCura has crafted their own distinct musical identity: “Califas Canto,” a remix of rhythms and vocal expressions from Iberia to California.
Fronted by 3 powerhouse women they weave a tapestry of multi-lingual and thought provoking lyrics evoking the cultural kaleidoscope of their hometown Oakland. With the Cajón drum as the pulse LoCura combines Rumba Flamenca, Reggae, Son and Cumbia together with lyrical poetry to reflect the unique intersection of cultures in the Bay Area. Their themes range from border issues, immigrants rights to urban life and making another world possible. Ana Tijoux meets Manu Chao with a touch of Lhasa.
LoCura has toured the U.S., Canada, Nicaragua, Mexico and Spain playing music festivals and sharing the stage with artists such as Bombino, Quetzal, La Cuneta Son Machín, Ziggy Marley, Beats Antique, and Nortec Collective. In the Bay Area they have opened for Sergio Mendes, La Santa Cecilia, Bomba Estereo, and The Seshen and have sold out The Great American Music Hall and The Independent in San Francisco. LoCura has released three full length albums and is currently writing and recording music for their fourth album.
