Sanchez Contemporary presents: Cultura Cura/Culture Cures.

Last year’s all women art exhibit was dedicated to Damas Y Diosas. It was a beautiful exhibit with images of powerful women as Goddess. This year we are exploring the theme of women not only as Goddess but as healer. As women we take on many roles including caretakers, medicine givers, providers and preservers of cultural cures which have been handed down from our grandmothers (abuelas), all of which are full of ancestral natural plant based medicine.

This exhibition takes us on a healing journey through ancestral memories, symbolism, ritual, indigenous ceremony, cleansing and the importance of connecting to mother, grandmother, abuela and “cura” as source for healing guidance for our bodies, minds and spirit. This type of medicine goes deeper and gets to the heart of an ailment as opposed to symptom-based treatments.

As women we are the encouragers, mentors, counselors and comforters to the broken spirits of our loved ones. However in this role we often neglect to take care of ourselves. In addition the recent Me Too movement is triggering lots of women who live with PTSD which manifest as physical and mental illness. While the movement to open the conversation is good, there is not enough talk about what we are doing to heal these traumas for those affected. This show starts the conversation of healing our emotional/physical traumas. The artists have each captured what Cutura Cura means to them and through the process of creating art are setting the intention of healing themselves to in turn provide healing for their communities/families.

Sanchez Contemporary in downtown Oakland is one of the few art galleries that uses its space to showcase Latinx artists.

The latest exhibit opening this weekend will be solely dedicated to Latinx women. The name Cultura Cura (Culture Cures) explores the multiple roles that women may inhabit, not only as wives or mothers, but also as healers, providers, and preservers of culture, passing on from generation to generation. The exhibit also explores how women provide comfort, love, and healing to their loved ones, often forgetting to take care of themselves. Twenty-seven artists will show their work, and the opening reception will feature tunes by Susana y su Orquesta Adelante.
