Herbst Theatre – San Francisco
“One of today’s superlative dance artists. […] He seemed an eagle in flight.” The New York Times 3/11/2016
Back to San Francisco by popular demand after last March’s sold-out show Bay Area Flamenco is honored to present another thrilling performance by world-renowned dancer Farruquito.
Born into Spain’s “first family of Gypsy flamenco dance,” Farruquito made his Broadway stage debut in the Broadway production “Flamenco Puro” at age five alongside his grandfather, the legendary dancer El Farruco. At age eight he appeared in Carlos Saura’s film “Flamenco,” and was directing his own shows by fifteen. In the ensuing years this vibrant young artist has garnered worldwide recognition at the highest level as he continues to deepen his personal approach to flamenco, bringing his family’s dance legacy firmly into the 21st century.
Farruquito will be joined by a group of Spain’s top flamenco artists including guitarist Roman Vicenti, singers Encarna Anillo, Mari Vizarraga, Antonio Zúñiga and Pepe de Pura and percussionist/dancer El Polito.
“Possessed, he tore movement from the air, shaped extraordinary phrases and paragraphs of dance and rhythm, banished everything predictable and polite from the staging … Farruquito revealed himself to be a master of rhythmic nuance, of steps and their emotional and dynamic causes, of dance as communicative truth and the reason for his identity.” The Financial Times (UK) 2/26/2016
