[film] Mexican Maladies: Arturo Ripstein from First to Last // San Francisco

[film] Mexican Maladies: Arturo Ripstein from First to Last // San Francisco

Arturo Ripstein is one of Mexico’s most subversive and original directors, turning popular genres into fearless attacks on prejudice and complacency in Mexican society.

Our 2-part program presents his very first film from 1966 + his most recent work from 2015.

He has taken inspiration from filmmakers such as Luis Buñuel, and also influenced a whole further generation, including Alex Cox, director of the 1986 cult classic Sid and Nancy. Now in his fifth decade of filmmaking, Ripstein transforms popular genres into fearless attacks on prejudice and complacency in Mexican society. This two-part program presents his very first film (in a new digital restoration) and his most recent work from 2015.
