Volunteer Spanish Training for Foster Care [CASA of San Mateo County]

Foster Care Spanish Training: CASA of San Mateo County

Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of San Mateo

CASA of San Mateo County is a non-profit organization that serves children and youth in the foster care system.

Our mission is “to ensure that all children who are under the protection of the Court have a consistent and caring adult who helps them reach their full potential.”

Children and youth in foster care have been significantly abused and neglected. They have been traumatized.

They are then removed from their homes, familiar environments, schools, peers, etc. They are often shuttled from one home placement to the next, creating instability in their lives. They are confused, scared, frightened – alone. Sadly, the safety net they are placed in is not intended to meet their unique individual needs.

While child abuse and neglect occurs in all homes regardless of ethnicity, national studies indicate that Hispanic/Latino and African American children and youth enter the foster care system at higher rates, experience multiple moves among foster homes and stay in the child welfare system for a longer duration than children of non-minority status. They are less likely to return to their families of origin or be adopted, and subsequently less likely to have a permanent family than non-minority children. These children/youth and their families are regularly treated differently than their non-minority counterparts with regard to the quality of and number of services they receive promoting stability, support by foster parents, contact with social workers and access to mental health and drug treatment.

In an effort to address this disaproportionality and give a voice to this underrepresented community, the first CASA training fully in Spanish was launched in 2008. Since then, we continue to be the only program nationwide to offer a training fully in Spanish. In efforts to keep this movement going we are looking for passionate people who can help us share the CASA story and the need for Latino volunteers.

Our next all Spanish Training begins March 13th.

Before attending the training you must first attend our long Spanish orientation. The up coming orientation dates are: Wednesday March 1st from 6p-7p and Wednesday March 8th from 6p-7p.
