About free shows:

The series, Illuminate LIVE, kicks off its 2024 season March 1 and continues through mid-November with shows every Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.

The free concerts attract more than 250,000 music lovers throughout each season. To honor International Women’s Day – the entire month of March will feature women or women-fronted musical groups. In total, 14 women-focused shows are planned during the month.

The full lineup of performers is as diverse and local as it was in its first three seasons. The 2024 concerts will feature R&B, soul, jazz, funk, big band musicians, string ensembles, indie and psychedelic rock bands, and many singer-songwriters. In addition, the series will include reggae, salsa, and some EDM and electronic music.

The free, all-ages concerts will run through mid-November, and echo the previous format:

1. Singer/Songwriter Wednesdays 4 – 7 p.m.
2. Friday Happy Hour 4:30 – 7:30 p.m.
3. Crucial Reggae Sundays 4:20 – 7:30 p.m. (+ select Saturdays).

The free concert series was originally launched as part of Golden Gate Park’s 150th anniversary in 2020, a yearlong celebration put on by the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department. The activation followed Illuminate’s nearly $1 million renovation of the space, which included a new stage, built-in theatrical lighting and a state-of-the-art sound system.

The 122-year-old Golden Gate Bandshell is the oldest structure in Golden Gate Park’s Music Concourse, an open-air plaza built for the California Midwinter International Exposition of 1894. Also called the Spreckels Temple of Music, the Bandshell was a gift to San Franciscans from sugar magnate Claus Spreckels.

About the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department:

The San Francisco Recreation and Park Department currently manages more than 225 parks, playgrounds, and open spaces throughout San Francisco, including two outside city limits—Sharp Park in Pacifica and Camp Mather in the High Sierras. The system includes full-complex recreation centers, swimming pools, golf courses, sports fields, and numerous small-to-medium-sized clubhouses that offer a variety of sports- and arts-related recreation programs for people of all ages. Included in the Department’s responsibilities are Golden Gate Park, Coit Tower, the Marina Yacht Harbor, the San Francisco Zoo, and Lake Merced. In 2017, San Francisco became the first city in the nation where all residents have access to a park within a 10-minute walk, a direct result of the Department’s commitment to increasing and improving parkland in the city.
