About Cinderella:
Christopher Wheeldon—of An American in Paris fame—transforms the timeless tale of Cinderella© with stunning style, charming twists, and mesmerizing visual effects.
This magical ballet leaves behind the fairy godmother and talking mice in favor of a delightfully human story with a hopeful heroine, a noble prince, and magical elements such as an enormous billowing tree, whimsical creatures, and a carriage whose magical creation onstage will take your breath away.
Set to the gorgeous score by Sergei Prokofiev, Wheeldon’s Cinderella© is a fairy tale for our time.
Cinderella includes set and costume designs by Tony Award-winning designer Julian Crouch and San Francisco-native puppeteer Basil Twist, who creates the tree that grows from Cinderella’s tears and directs the dazzling end of Act I.
San Francisco Ballet‘s run of performances of Christopher Wheeldon’s Cinderella© will fill the War Memorial Opera House with the sounds of Sergei Prokofiev’s beautiful score.
Wheeldon’s imagining of this classic fairy tale ballet, featuring a cast of 197 performers, is inspired by the Brothers Grimm’s written version of the story and “offers no fairy godmother or clock striking midnight.
Instead, Cinderella’s heroine is in control of her destiny, emerging from the death of her mother empowered by love.”
