Nicaraguan-American percussionist, educator, producer, and bandleader Annette A. Aguilar is a bona fide product of the Mission District, and she’s got the mural to prove it. ‘
Portrayed in the Chata Mural in memory of KPOO radio host Micaela “Chata” Gutierrez at 24th and South Van Ness Streets, Aguilar has been a force on the New York music scene for three decades, but she’s never neglected her ties to the Bay Area. As a bandleader, she’s best known for her Brazilian-Latin combo StringBeans, which has recorded three critically hailed albums. The blazing band has toured internationally, including three stints as U.S. State Department-sponsored Latin Jazz Ambassadors. Currently the timpanist/percussionist for the Association of Dominican Classical Artists, Aguilar is thrilled to bring her ensemble back home.
