ALAMEDA — The Island’s nonprofit art center Rhythmix Cultural Works will be celebrating its 10th anniversary season with a fundraising gala from 2 to 5 p.m. Aug. 19.

Its annual fundraiser, formerly called “Wine, Women and Song,” is a celebration of performance art and wine, with a focus on highlighting female talent in both arenas.

“When we first started doing this four years ago, we wanted to bring attention to women wine makers because they make up less than 5 percent of winemakers worldwide,” Rhythmix Executive Director Tina “Bean” Blaine said. “We happen to live in a region where there are so many celebrated women winemakers, so that became a focus, along with the fact that we were featuring a lot of women musicians and dancers.”

The event will feature performances by the East Bay belly dancing group EBB & Flow; a Cuban salsa group called Salsa-Lab; an Afro-Puerto Rican traditional dance group called Taller Bombalele; and a Japanese taiko group called Maze Daiko. There will also be a live six-piece band, the KTO project, performing.

“The event is not men-exclusive and we don’t want men to feel they aren’t welcome. We’re just featuring a lot of women rock stars in the world of wine and spirits and beers,” Blaine said. “And it’s really exciting because they’re such male-dominated industries, along with the entertainment industry.”

There will also be a guided tasting of local craft spirits by Napa vintner Dalie Ceja of Ceja Vineyards, distiller Caley Shoemaker of Hangar 1 and brewer Devonne Buckingham of Drake’s Brewery.

“It’s just nice to have the opportunity to celebrate the women out there that are so fantastic,” Blaine added.

Guests will also be able to participate in a silent auction, a wine raffle and see an archive exhibit documenting the history of Rhythmix over the past 10 years.

Tickets for the event are $60 in advance or $75 at the door, and about 250 people are expected to attend. All proceeds from the event go toward supporting the numerous free educational arts programs Rhythmix runs for East Bay youth.
