Salsa night @ La Pena // Berkeley

Please join us on Saturday, November 14th at La Peña Cultural Center for a Children’s Organ Transplant Association (COTA) fundraiser in honor of Sonya Haggett.

Sonya is a longtime Bay Area Salsa community member who was born with Cystic Fibrosis, a terminal chronic illness that mainly affects the lungs. Sonya is now in need of a lung transplant, and not been able to dance since 2013 due to her declining lung function. She is, though, hopeful and excited about returning to the dance floor once she has received her lung transplant! Sonya has been on the waiting list for donor lungs since March 2014, and the transplant could happen at any time!

We are VERY close to meeting our total fundraising goal. All we need is $5,000 more, and we will have reached our fundraising goal!! Let’s dig deep now and celebrate this amazing community accomplishment together.

***If you cannot make the event please consider donating anyway – any amount helps!***

The November 14th event at La Peña Cultural Center will be a celebration of life, community, and love, with Bay Area’s hottest timba band, Rumbaché, keeping everyone dancing and smiling! Sonya is longtime fan of Rumbaché (she knew them when they were Quimbombó playing at Maiko!), and they are very happy and honored to donate their artistry to COTA in her honor. Put on your dancing shoes and bring your good vibes to make this an extra special party!

Also donating their expertise are dance instructors Nicholas Van Eyck & Serena Wong of Salsa Vale Todo. They will be giving a salsa dance class from 830-930pm. Yeah!

Lastly, DJ Dark Rum of Añejo Productions (a.k.a. Rick Washington) will be spinning in between sets for a full, continuous night of non-stop music!

Buy tickets in advance:

Minimum suggested donation is $20 per ticket. If you are buying multiple tickets please list how many in the comments. Donations above $20 per ticket are more than welcome!!!
Tickets are also available at the door.

**JUST ADDED** A baked goods and Sonya Swag table! Did you miss out on a COTA for Sonya hat, a Soiree for Sonya glass or an Agua! mug? All will be available at the event, along with yummy baked goods from#TeamSonya volunteers.

First 20 doors to donate $50 or more get a FREE Rumbaché CD – Live @ Jelly’s!

Rumbaché has established themselves as one of the hottest Bay Area Salsa Bands, featuring 2014 Grammy Award Winner Omar Ledezma Jr. as their lead singer, as well as a who’s who of Bay Area and International musicians. Fusing salsa, timba, bomba, funk and whatever else they can find to spice up the mood, they provide a hard hitting style of playing. And while you can hear them interpreting the classic and contemporary Cuban and Salsa repertoire, they are not shy with their own expression, as evidenced by their hit debut CD “Llego La Fiesta”, released in April of 2011. Rumbaché is the voice of youth for San Francisco’s Salsa & Timba scene, and ignites enthusiasm in dancers and musical connoisseurs alike.

Nov 14th’s performance will feature:

Omar Ledezma Jr – Congas & Lead Vocals
Jordan Wilson – Guitar & Coro
Sergio Duran – Guiro & Coro
Bob Crawford – Piano
Ernesto Mazar Kindelan – Bass & Coro
Ed Morrison – Trumpet
Darren Smith – Tenor Sax & Coro
Galen Green – Bari Sax
Patricio Angulo – Timbal with Drumset; Musical Director
