“The Pedrito Martinez Group is writing a new chapter in Cuban music history” –
NPR All Things Considered.
With pure polyrhythmic precision, The Pedrito Martinez Group is a joyful adventure of fresh Afro-Cuban spirit. Led by Martinez, whose complex rumba and batá drumming joined by keyboardist Edgar Pantoja-Aleman range and groove, Alvaro Benavides (electric bass) and Jhair Sala (percussion) round out the dynamic. And when Martinez channels the beautiful Yoruba chants – still used by Cubans to address African gods – the group’s virtuosity is complete.
Pedrito Martinez has ignited a devoted fan base that includes Eric Clapton, Taj Mahal, Roger Waters, Derek Trucks, and Wynton Marsalis. The group has self-released two live albums. Their first studio album, The Pedrito Martinez Group, was released in 2013 on Motema Music.
The Pedrito Martinez Group has appeared at Jazz at Lincoln Center, Apollo Theater, The Newport Jazz Festival, globalFest, New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, TED Conference and TEDx, The Montreal Jazz Festival, The Red Sea Festival, Montreux Jazz Fest, The Sydney Festival, Bonnaroo, Yoshi’s/San Francisco, The Umbria Jazz Festivals, Saratoga Jazz Festival, Yerba Buena Gardens Festival/San Francisco, Festival Internationale, Playboy Jazz Festival, SF Jazz, The Barbican, The Jazz Standard and Joe’s Pub NYC.
The future is on fire for Pedrito Martinez – deemed “an incomparable performer” by The New York Times.
