Vive Oaxaca in Santa Cruz

“Senderos” presents several free events to experience the flavors and language of Oaxaca, Mexico leading up to our main event La Guelaguetza.

Presentations are in Spanish with English interpretation.

Sunday, April 7

11am-12pm – Preserving & Strengthening Indigenous Languages
Through the Nido de Lenguas collaboration, Senderos is partnering with The Humanities Institute and the Linguistics Department at UCSC to share the beauty and richness of Oaxacan Indigenous languages. This will be a panel presentation with Indigenous speakers.

12-3pm – Oaxacan Mole, Music and Dance

Oaxaca’s cuisine is internationally renowned, especially the seven varieties of mole. Senderos is hosting expert cocineros (chefs) from three regions of Oaxaca to share their knowledge and demonstrate traditional cooking.


Wednesday, April 10

5-8pm – Oaxacan Street Food
Learn how to make Oaxacan street food. Enjoy empanadas, molotes, memelas, tetelas, and atole beverage.


Festival, April 14

The Vive Oaxaca Guelaguetza is an authentic cultural festival with food, music, dance, music, and crafts presented each spring by Senderos.

This local festival is like the traditional fiestas celebrated each summer in Oaxaca, Mexico. Guelaguetza is a Zapotec word that means “a commitment of sharing and cooperation.” Guelaguetza is a celebration that honors the gods for sufficient rainfall and a bountiful harvest.
