About:

Create your own personal shield, or chimalli in Nahuatl, inspired by Tonatiuh, the Aztec Sun Stone found in Tenochtitlan, the capital of the Aztec empire.

Learn about the different elements that make up the sacred stone and how chimallis are used for protection. For ages 5-9.

Supply list:

Shield template for printing or to look at as inspiration
A small plate or saucer
A few sheets of paper (colored, construction, grocery bag)
Scissors
Glue or tape
Markers, colored pencils or crayons
Feathers (optional) or feathers template

About the Instructor:

Rachel-Anne Palacios is a self-taught, multicultural artist, whose pieces reflect the respect she has for culture, religion, traditional values, elders and the cycle of life and death. Palacios grew up amongst Oakland’s cultural diversity in a household headed by her mother and grandmother. For years, she has been a beloved SFPL instructor at public art programs. In addition, she is a fine arts teaching artist at The Crucible in Oakland, Oakland Unified School District and with Youth in Arts in Marin County.
