In Venezuela, a bululú is a buzzing party, a gathering that generates excitement. It only takes a minute listening to Bululú to understand why they’ve claimed the moniker as their own. Led by Venezuelan-born percussionist and vocalist Lali Mejia, the nine-piece combo draws on folkloric styles from Venezuelan, Colombian, Cuban and other Caribbean cultures. With American-Guatemalan bassist Ayla Davila serving as music director, the ensemble delivers infectiously grooving and insistently celebratory performances. Reflecting the vibrant mix that makes up the Bay Area’s Latin music scene, Bululú features a stellar cast of highly seasoned players, including Puerto Rican-born vocalist Sofia Magdelena, bassist and music director Ayla Davila, American pianist Erick Peralta, Venezuelan percussionist/vocalist Omar Ledezma Jr., string expert Kai Lyons, trombonist Mara Fox, Venezuelan vocalists Norma Kansau, Jose Gregorio Kansau and special guest on percussion Venezuelan-born Elba Calderon.
