“Salsa & Storytelling” is a vibrant celebration that combines the infectious energy of live salsa music with captivating tales from its Cuban origins.

Hola amigos! I’m so excited to announce that our education + entertainment performance, Salsa and Storytelling, was picked up by SF Public Library for a FREE, family friendly community event that will take place at their beautiful outdoor Marina location 3-4:30 PM.

This is very much a passion project that fuses elements of storytelling, drama, audience engagement and, of course, live music (with – hopefully – dancing from YOU – the audience!).

What is Salsa & Storytelling?

Well, first, it is a brief walk through the history of salsa music – a complex, multilayered topic, but I try to provide an overview accessible to everyone, and provide historical context for the specific songs we perform.

Before performing different songs, we delve into the STORIES behind them – stories gleaned from sources as deep as a quick google search (LOL), dusty old newspaper archives in the Stanford Libraries, or listening to interviews with the original composers. I started piecing together a story from the mosaic of disparate sources that make up the landscape of salsa music history, and, indeed, any oral music history.

Some of the stories leading behind these songs are sad – some happy – but all significant and important in their own right, and led to the creation of the music we know and love.
