Iluminado “Yaya” Maldonado was born in Puerto Rico and lived most of his life between New York and the Bay Area. Among countless other contributions, he established and sustained the Afro-Cuban / Puerto Rican Rumba Jams at La Peña for decades, which are one of the main Rumba gatherings in the East Bay that have preserved this traditional folkloric music along with many other styles of Afro-Cuban rhythms and dance.
Yaya passed away on March 27th of the present year. This event will be a moment of profound respect and appreciation to Yaya and all the ancestors on whose shoulders we stand on today. Come support this cultural tradition and let’s make sure that Rumba continues to build community in the Bay Area for generations to come!
PLEASE NOTE: We will require ID & Proof of Full Vaccination at the door. Booster shots and the use of masks inside will be encouraged but NOT mandatory. See our most updated Covid-19 Policy at https://lapena.org/covid-19-updates/.
