Biography:
There’s a New Clown in Town: ChiPiliNa Brings Spanglish Music, Playtime, and Laughter to SF Bay Area Families!
San Francisco Bay Area, CA – There’s a new clown in town, and she’s on a mission to spark laughter, learning, and love across cultures. Meet ChiPiliNa, a colorful Spanish clown dedicated to bringing joy to children in a way that also nurtures their emotional intelligences, like adaptability, cultural empathy, kindness, and creativity – one giggle at a time.
Chipilina had her debut appearance on April 26, 2025, at Casa Círculo Cultural’s Children’s Festival in Redwood City, where she charmed audiences with her playful blend of music, interactive dances, storytelling, and bilingual silliness. Her performances and appearances are not just entertaining, they’re enriching, designed to nurture young hearts and minds through Spanish language exposure and creative expression.
ChiPiliNa, played by Kimberly Newton, MEd (AKA Kimba) has been creating eco-cultural experiences for children in Costa Rica, Arizona and the Bay Area since 1999. She produced popular, award-winning bilingual programs such as Costa Rica Volunteer Program, Spanish through the Arts, Spanish Play Studio, and AVENTURAS Summer and Day Camps, which she offered through her educational enterprise, Conexiones Institute. She has now created the “ChiPiliNa” to bring her diversity education and peace work out into the streets and public spaces in a way that is free and joyful for families. Her appearances are made possible through partnerships with the Redwood City Parks and Arts Foundation, Casa Circulo Cultural, Tradición Peruana Cultural Center and other organizations and institutions dedicated to creating fun and enriching community experiences.
“I believe silliness is sacred,” says Kimba. “And when children feel safe to be silly, they’re also learning how to be lighthearted, brave, expressive, and kind. I also infuse all my programs with second language exposure because research suggests that early exposure to a second language helps children develop mental flexibility, diversity awareness, and creativity, all of which are vital inner skills to be joyful and adaptable in a rapidly changing and multicultural world.”
