About show:

FREE Latin jazz concert Saturday, Feb.15 at 7 p.m. to celebrate the merger of Latin Jazz Youth Ensemble of San Francisco and CANA
(Cultura y Arte Nativa de las Americas).

The community is invited to attend a free concert featuring the Latin Jazz Youth Ensemble of San Francisco and the Mission Bay High School Mambo Orchestra from San Diego on Saturday, Feb. 15 at 7 p.m. at 683 Florida Street in San Francisco’s Mission District.

The concert celebrates the announcement from CANA that the highly esteemed Latin Jazz Youth Ensemble of San Francisco (LJYE) is now one of their programs. The LJYE will have a permanent home for rehearsals and performances at the new CANA building, the Indigenous Peoples Cultural Arts Healing Center located at 683 Florida Street in San Francisco.

The LJYE is a grassroots organization founded in 2001 by Arturo Riera, Managing Director; John Calloway, Music Director, and Sylvia Ramirez, Communications Director. The ensemble’s mission is to promote Latin jazz by providing free music instruction to youth ages 10-17 years of age. The group performs at a high level that has earned them gigs at major jazz festivals, civic events, and local music venues such as Yoshi’s Jazz Club.

“We are excited to adopt the LJYE as one of our arts programs,” says CANA CEO Roberto Hernandez. “We look forward to providing the youth in our community an opportunity to perform Latin jazz and salsa music and learn from accomplished teachers. Eliminating barriers to access to the arts and the LJYE free instruction model aligns with our goals at CANA.”

The LJYE is directed by two alumni of the program, Daniel Riera and Alex Farrell, following the retirement of founding Music Director Calloway. Both Riera and Farrell are performing musicians and recording artists with teaching experience in the Bay Area music scene.

Managing Director Arturo Riera says he is proud that LJYE alumni are now directors of the program and is grateful for the relationship with CANA. “For 24 years, we haven’t had a permanent place to rehearse. CANA gives us a true home in the heart of the Mission District. The LJYE has nurtured many young musicians who are now professional players on the Latin music scene and this merger allows us to continue developing talented youth for years to come.”
