About celebration:

On the fifth week after Easter (from Friday to following Thursday).  It’s the most important religious festival of the Azores and the second largest in Portugal.

Thousands of Azorean people travel from the other islands, from the mainland and the US, Canada and Brazil, for these countries are home to Azorean immigrants.

The São Francisco Square and the Esperança Convent are the meeting point for believers in the Ecce Homo, or ‘Lord of the Islands’, devotion.

History:

The first procession took place in April 11th, 1700. Legend says that it was a very cloudy Sunday in the middle of a seismic crisis. Mother Teresa of the Anunciada was the one responsible for the procession.

A group of locals decided to do a procession with the image of Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres. They chose this particular day because the big earthquake was spreading terror and they needed divine help.
